Woolongong Pair Clean Up Fourball competition

October 6, 2017

Sixty hopefuls from across NSW, converged on Bonville Golf Resort this week to contest the Annual Golf NSW Mens State Fourball Championship. The 36 hole tournament is a chance for players to experience Bonville’s championship layout under full tournament conditions. Close to 20,000 players work their way through over 300 club qualifying rounds and win their way to Bonville by making it through their respective district play-offs to form one of 15 metropolitan and 15 country teams.

Finalists enjoy accommodation, food and beverage as well as golf and prize packs, making the tournament one of the most significant amateur events on the Golf NSW calendar. The competition involves two competitors playing as partners, each playing their own ball. The best score of the two players is the score for the hole. The scoring is done in a versus par format.

Brothers Peter and Dean McGregor from Liverpool Golf Club shot a solid first round posting +10 but had to share their place on the leader board with Gordon Smith and Frank Mercuri from Leeton Soldiers Golf Club. Hot on their heels going into the final round at +9 were James Romanowski and Ronald Davison of Woolongong Golf Club.

A seeded draw saw the field get away quickly on day two where James Romanowski and Ronald Davison showed just one blemish on their score card on the Par five, tenth hole to post a second-round score of +10 and finish with the trophy and an overall score of +19 for the tournament. Coonabarabran pair Barry Dowsett and Michael Resch finished in a three-way tie with Peter and Dean McGregor and Gordon Smith and Frank Mercuri, but with a remarkable +12 on day two after posting just +3 on day one, the pair came from well behind to slide into the runner up position with an overall +15 for the tournament.

Golf NSW General Manager Graham Phillipson said “We look forward to the holding the finals here at beautiful Bonville each year. We’ve seen some great golfing throughout the entire series in 2017 and a huge congratulations must go to all the teams who made it this year” This unique and exciting event, welcomes players from every corner of the state and is the first of two Golf NSW events to play out on The Coffs Coast. The Ladies State Fourball finals are due to be contested at Bonville Golf Resort in November.
